Perform the step-up while holding a dumbbell in each hand by your sides.

Primary: quadriceps, gluteals
Secondary: hamstrings, adductors
Movement
Stand approximately 24 inches (60 cm) from a bench or a platform roughly 16 inches (40 cm) tall. Face away from the bench or platform.
Reach one leg back and rest the top of your foot flat against the platform.
With your hands on your hips, drop the knee of the back leg straight down in a controlled manner, making sure to keep the torso upright.
Graze the ground with the knee of the back leg and then return to the starting position.
After completing the desired number of repetitions on one side, switch legs and repeat.
